Cancer

Oh, my dear, sweet Cancer
You with your beautiful shell
And deep blue eyes
And layers of soul
That go even deeper

And claws that grab, pinch, and tightly
Grip the hurt that won’t let go
I, too, suffer the tragedies
You carry on that heavy heart of yours

The more I want you
The more you pull back
Slipping away into the waves of the sea that roll
Obscuring with them any trace left
Of a heart once drawn in the sand
By once happy hands

Now the moon is my only companion
Staring down cold and silent
As relentless waves crash over me
While you drift
Further and further
Out to sea
